City of Ottawa Museum Events - January 2017

Warm Up at Your Local Museums This Winter

Play in the past. Make happy memories for the future.

Calling all explorers! Kids between 3 and 10 years old are invited to come to the Nepean Museum on the last Saturday afternoon of every month to explore the fascinating history of Nepean through fun hands-on games, crafts, and activities. There'll be a new theme every month; in January we'll take a look at the history of photography and even make a pinhole camera.

Make New Friends this PA Day

Looking for something fun to do on the January 30 PA Day? Come out to Billings Estate National Historic Site or the Nepean Museum for some winter fun! Kids aged 6 to 10 will discover how people kept warm and entertained themselves in the winters of the past. At Billings Estate National Historic Site, we'll look at some real artefacts, play games outside, do some painting, and bake a tasty treat. At Nepean Museum, we'll do some snowshoeing, make a vintage stereoscope, and play with some old fashioned toys. Registration is required, so please contact us for more information.

Preschool Play Dates are back at Billings Estate National Historic Site this winter! On Fridays in February and March from 10 am to 11 am, children aged 3 to 5 and their parents can meet up and play in a fun and historic environment. In February, preschoolers will learn about the four seasons, animal tracks, hibernating animals, and winter birds. Registration is required, so please contact us for more information.

Enjoy the fresh air as you join us for Snowshoeing under the Stars and Sunday Snowshoeing at picturesque Pinhey's Point Historic Site. We'll teach you the basics of the sport and take you on a hike exploring the varied natural and historical features of this beautiful location on the Ottawa River. Snowshoeing Under the Stars takes place on January 27, February 17, and March 10 from 7 pm to 9 pm and our new family Sunday Snowshoeing takes place on January 29, February 26, and March 12 from 10 am to 12 noon. Space and snowshoes are limited, so please contact us for more information.

Gather around the campfire at Billings Estate National Historic Site and make traditional recipes on Saturday mornings this February. Children aged 8 to 10 are invited to learn more about the history of cooking and the Billings family while playing games, exploring the site and checking out some authentic cooking artefacts. We'll try out different recipes every week, including pioneer bannock bread, Victorian snickerdoodles, and lumberjack pancakes. Registration is required, so please contact us for more information.

Our Museums are on the Road!

The City of Ottawa Museums are on the move this winter, bringing history to life for residents of Ottawa. Come see us at the Shenkman Arts Centre on Saturday, February 4 as part of FĂȘte Frissons, where we'll be talking about ice harvesting on the Ottawa River. You can even try out some antique ice tongs for yourself! If you make it to City Hall during Winterlude, be sure to stop by and say hi to our staff who will be on hand on Sunday, February 5, 12, and 19 to show families what life was like during Ottawa winters of the past through games, crafts, and hands-on activities.

Artefact Showcase

This soup tureen is part of the City of Ottawa Museums archaeology collection and was one of many artefacts uncovered and preserved during the LeBreton Flats redevelopment project. This tureen was found on the former site of the Levi Young house, located on Lloyd Street right across from where the Canadian War Museum is now. The house was built in the 1870s and occupied until 1901, when it was used as a foundry. You can see more artefacts just like this one in the upcoming archaeology exhibition at Ottawa City Hall.

Archaeology Exhibition at City Hall

A special exhibition will be coming soon to the Heritage Building at Ottawa City Hall. The exhibition will feature a selection of archaeological objects from the of the City of Ottawa Museums artefact collection, many on display for the first time. These found treasures from Ottawa's history will paint a picture of the city's history and tell the stories of those who came before us. Keep following this newsletter to find out more as work on this exhibition continues.
